Parent Teacher Conference

This might not hold a lot of interest for others but this is about the only documentation I do about the kids and their development...so on to their academic update.  This week is fall break and on top of packing for a trip and our normal schedule of "stuff"  Parent Teacher Conferences were thrown into the mix. Amazing how hard it was to find time for all three kids.  Yes, even Andrea needed an update of her IEP plan which she needs to keep her enrolled in her speech program.
Andrea was first up, Monday morning before school....I was amazed at how wonderful all the teachers were at finding time to meet.  Andrea is finally making progress in her articulation of "K, P, T"  Her teacher was very happy with her progress but also pointed out the next group of deficiencies for her.  Seems like a lot of her "blends" come out sounding like "FW" which is why we have such a hard time understanding her sometimes.  She said that Andrea is able to focus and sit when asked but  does tend to be a little bossy to her class mate (somehow that didn't surprise me!)  All in all no surprises, we just need to keep working.
Becca's meeting was after school, Ron met me and we swapped cars...he got the car full of kids headed off to tumbling and I got the empty car headed to a parent teacher meeting (pretty good deal for me!).  Becca's conference was short and sweet.  Behaviour wise she was doing great.  She is finally breaking out of her shell and interacting, making friends and also able to ask questions when she doesn't understand something.  This has been a big improvement from pre-K, she was so shy and had no clue how to meet new friends.  It is nice to see her jumping in and just having fun being herself.  She did great with her letter recognition and sounds.  The area she did need some improvement in was in her letters and counting.   I was not too surprised, I had asked her to write 1-20 the other day for her homework and realized she was unable to do so.  Anyway, something to keep working on.  Her teacher was excited that they would start reading, always a fun time for the kids.
Brayden's conference was today during lunch. A little crazy with James running around throwing crackers everywhere. Brayde said we made a mess in his room.  Anyway, Much of his conference focused on reading, they do a lot of testing for comprehension.  Brayden was on the low end for his grade level-no surprise.  We had worked all summer and his teacher still said he was quite behind at the beginning of the year.  The good news was that he is making great progress and his teacher was very happy to let him progress with what he is doing currently (reading at home).  They do have a special program to help tutor those kids who need a little extra help.  He is doing great in Math-which his teacher says he loves (yes, they still play "round the world").  Spelling, Bible, English, Social Studies were all good as well.  The only other thing that is going on with Brayden is another speech articulation issue-once again we will start the process with a speech pathologist...issues with the "th" blend.  Oh....how can I forget the thing that is most important to me-he is doing wonderful in classroom etiquette and respectful behaviour to his teacher and classmates!
All, in all the conferences went very well.  No surprises but always room for improvement.  I am learning to enjoy sitting with each kid and working with them-I think it is as much of a learning for me as it is for them....and we are all getting better at the whole process!
