Never Assume!
I know better than to assume, but it is funny how I find myself still making assumptions...about people, kids. Last night it was Andrea. We were playing a "get to know you" game at church where each kid had to say the month they were born. I was sitting across from Andrea by Becca and didn't think twice about Andrea not knowing the answer. She has been my only child to remember her birthday day...telling anyone since she was three that her birthday was AUGUST 5. Anyway, we went around the circle and when it was her turn I litterly saw my little girl melt in fear...wide eyes, filled with tears, red face and a look of wanting to hide into Ron who was sitting next to her. I didn't understand. I know she can become shy at times but we have been working out of that stage. Where was this coming from. After some heavy prompting she managed to announce in a meak voice that her name was Andrea and she was born in August. As I was tucking her into bed that night I asked her why she didn't tell everyone her birthday, since I know she knows it is in August. Andrea looked at my with a confused look and forcefully said, "I DON'T KNOW WHEN I WAS BORN!!" I looked back at her like she was slightly crazy, and then I realized I assumed she understood that her birthday was the day/month she was born. I told her that on August 5 she was born, her birthday was when she was born. If you know Andrea you know the look she gave me...her completely surprised, mouth dropping, big eyes look. Complete with a big "WHAAAAT??" Anyway-she now knows if someone asks her what month she was born, it means... when is her birthday?-so funny.

I was laughing out loud when I read this because I have this happen to me with high schoolers about the most random things. The things they don't know, that we think they should know, can lead to some interesting situations.
